Thomas Berger, author of Little Big Man who passed away recently, had this to say when asked why he wrote:

“Why does one write? Because it isn’t there! Unlike Everest and other celebrated eminences. Beginners sometime ask me how a novel is written, the answer to which is: Any way at all. One knows only when it is finished, and then if one is at all serious, he will never do it the same way again.”

I like his prescription that any way of writing is fine. And I also like his sentiment about not repeating oneself when writing. I've tried that and it ain't easy! Apparently Berger wrote in many different genres and was well-regarded for all of his books. I may just look for his books in the library when I get a chance.

Very interesting, Ghis. His philosophy should certainly ease the anxiety so many of us feel when we first begin to write. It doesn't matter how you get there; just do it; post it; and enjoy it.

As to not repeating yourself, you're right, it ain't easy.
