| Went on a little jaunt to Los Alamos California and stayed at the Union Hotel, which is a neat old western hotel to visit if you get the chance. Built in 1880, it has had some changes over the years but the room we stayed in was original-down to the wallpaper.   Upstairs lounge   Downstairs lobby with saloon adjoining. The saloon was closed the morning the pictures were taken so no photo of it, but it was a traditional western saloon-narrow and long with a billiard room at the end. La Parisima mission is nearby(and near Lompoc). The mission was in ruins, but restored in the 1930s and I think is the only California mission that has the entire 'workings' of a mission restored as well so you can see how the missions functioned: gardens, livestock area, soldiers quarters, ovens, weaving room with working looms, etc. The docents dress in period costume on special event days and demonstrate the baking, weaving etc. The mission kept a blacksmith and a master weaver(the two highest 'ranking' Spanish civilians), and a docent told us that the records showed that they received supplies of chocolate for themselves and their families as a perk for working there! | What an interesting hotel! Is the town of Los Alamos old western, too, like Columbia was? Think I'd pay the extra $20 for a private bathroom.

| It's not an old west town like Columbia. It has a short main street with some oldish buildings on it used for restaurants, but not a lot of history. That's why we drove to the mission.
