PostSubject: Stolen stories   Mon Feb 08, 2016 10:27 am

This was posted on my Facebook by someone from another fandom. I took a quick look and I can see this applies to some of the writers here so you may wish to check it out.

I'm passing this on from a fellow fanfic writer in another of my fandoms...I've only been to the top site mentioned below and have already found three of my stories along with my entire FFNet profile on it. I thought I should make you all aware of this as our stories and personal profiles/information are being stolen off Fanfic.net.

I'm not sure if you all are aware of this or not, but I've just been alerted by a friend that our fics are being stolen wholesale from FFN, and they've been posting onto these sites:

http://www.thebuystock.org/
http://www.talkfictions.com/
http://fictionavenue.org/
http://thanfiction.org/
http://hmofiction.org/

All of these had my stolen stuff and profile.

HOW TO REPORT

Go here:https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/spamreportform?hl=en
Put in the name of the website (one report each)
Write in additional details: This is a spamdexing mirror site tohttps://www.fanfiction.net/ and has stolen my profiles and intellectual property.
Click “I am not a robot” and then “Report webspam”
Report more by clicking the link on: Go back to the webspam report form.

Writers and fanfic readers should report these websites that profit off our hard work. Stop plagiarism and art theft!

The first link looked pretty identical to fanfiction.net, minus the avatars.

How do they profit doing this?

I spotted my stories on the first site...but don't have a Google account to use to report it. Do you know if anyone has told Fanfic.net about this?

The writer who originally posted it will have done but I don't expect they're that bothered. Not sure what the purpose of doing it is either. I suppose we just have to accept that's the risk of putting stories on sites which haven't got a 'visible' host.
You're fab BJay!  sm thankyou grouphug

I went to one of the sites and immediately got hit with one of those phony virus alerts followed by an urgent message: --you've got to download this to protect your computer!!! No way would I do that, of course. But, I had to shut off my computer to get my browser to close. I would say there's a pretty good chance that there is a malware risk in going to those sites. So be careful if you visit them.

I can't see how the sites would profit off the stories unless they have an arrangement to be paid -if they have advertisements with links that readers actually link to. So who knows why they are doing this; it seems like a really complex method to use if you are trying to spread a computer virus or malware.

Thanks, Frankie!  grouphug

Thank you for the info on this, Frankie.

I checked a couple of the sites and had the same experience that BeeJay described. Maybe this is more of a way to lure folks in and attempt to hack into their computers.
