| I figured what with board members being from various countries and all, it would be fun to discuss the World Cup here. For example, the BBC had this to say about the US-Ghana game today: The US erupted in celebration as football fans across the country celebrated a last-gasp win against the team's World Cup nemesis, Ghana. I love the use of the word "nemesis" here! And I've seen it used in the same context on other sites. I was able to watch the second half and it was a really good game. Since the US is in Group G along with Germany--the Group of Death--I hope a certain someone in that country will contribute her thoughts! And regarding the first match... Sorry, England! But congrats to Germany and Netherlands. Um...where is Canada??? | |

| Well, congrats to USA on their win. Apart from your own national teams... Who are you - however laconically - supporting?? This household has picked a name from the proverbial hat and is (when and if, if and when England go out... ) gently going to cheer for Brave Little Belgium. I also felt a gentle tug of warmth at seeing Mexico make a good show against Brazil - 'cos our boys visit Mexico as their Winter resort of choice, huh? [Otherwise I am generally on side of whoever is the underdog] | |

| Well, we (the Dutch) made it through to the next round after being both Spain (5-1) and Australia (3-2). I haven't watch any games yet but then I don't have to because I live across a pub and according to the noise I hear coming from the pub, I know who scored. Like Calico, I'm also rooting a bit for Belgium. |

| I haven't been able to watch many games but the ones I have seen have been really good. Sorry for England but hoping the US can advance after today's game. The US-Portugal match was great to watch and I'm sure the US-Germany one will be, too. Go USA! | |

| Sorry Ghis - I've only just found this. I must apologize for having been very sporadic in my visits to the site of late. I get distracted from things I'd rather be doing (like coming here) far too often. The World Cup - That's all there is to see or hear over here. Flags on cars and outside houses, appointments and meetings and everything rescheduled to fit in with matches and the local newspaper came over to interview my family and myself on the England/German rivalry that has peppered football history ever since that fateful day in 1966. They even took a picture. Needless to say there is a big brouhaha about the whole thing especially as the Germans are doing rather well. Despite that the majority of people here seem to think that the Netherlands will win. I have no idea and have not been following closely - my children are, very kindly, doing that for me. My excitement over football is definitely confined to watching my own offspring race around the pitch chasing a ball and I keep the thought to myself that, if they just gave everyone a ball, they wouldn't need to fight over the one. Surely FIFA could afford it. Don't worry - my kids keep telling me I'm not funny too. Good luck to all those still in the running...and when is ASJ on the tely again. | |

| I haven't had enough time lately to post here or even watch the games (sadly) but I do want to say I enjoyed your rueful comments, Allegra. Good luck to Germany today! And good luck to Netherlands tomorrow, Radiogaga! | |

| I watched sports commentators on Belgian, English, German and Dutch tv and EVERYONE is in shock - Brasil got slaughtered by the Germans. It was painful to watch the second half at some point because the Brasilian fans were cheering for the Germans.
Fingers crossed for the Dutch tomorrow.

| I watched Wednesday's game... So sorry, Radiogaga80; I was rooting for The Netherlands! They played well although I do think Argentina played a tiny bit better in terms of possessing the ball more. However, I definitely think penalty kicks are not the way to decide who wins a soccer match.

| Well done, Germany! Allegra, is the celebratory noise keeping you up?! Maybe in a week or so things will go back to normal. In the meantime, enjoy! And also congrats to The Netherlands on their 3rd place showing. Not quite the same as being in the final but at least they didn't lose two in a row. Now I can ignore soccer for another four years! | |

| Congrats to Germany!
Did you really let your youngest stay up that late to watch the final game, Allegra? Good luck Monday morning waking up your boys! _________________ h "Do you ever get the feeling that nothing right is ever going to happen to us again?" - Kid Curry

| I was texting with a friend in Germany whose nerves were shattered by the time, somewhere during the second half. She said it looked like New Year's Eve when the match was over - cars honking, fireworks... The dutch team appreciated that third place was a good spot (before the World Cup, everyone thought they wouldn't survive the group stages) but they were disappointed because they felt they belonged in the finale. They won 7 games in a row and lost on penalty shootouts, so I have to agree. Oh well, that's over. On to the next big event: the new Doctor Who episodes! |

| My goodness! Thank the heavens above that it's all over. :hotsmiley: After the absolute trouncing of those poor brazilians excitement was at fever pitch (forgive the pun) for the rest of the week over here. I won't complain though because at least, after a depressingly long dry spell, a bunny hopped around the goal posts and invited me to play in the monthly challenge. I mean, there really hasn't been anything else going on. It's been quite mad. And yes, Penski, even my youngest stayed up to watch and celebrate afterwards - something to do with sounding car horns around town and fireworks from which I disassociated myself entirely. It was all very exciting. Today... Getting up for school? Oh dear... We'd better not go into that... But what a World Cup. It's been fun and we were as surprised as anyone to have made it all the way. Big huge congratulations to the Dutch and Radiogaga. See you in 2018 for the next round I hope. | |
