Below are two articles about writers getting negative reviews for their work.  The first is about an online publication which apparently has decided not to publish book reviews that are negative in tone.  The second is how an aspiring writer used negative feedback to incentivize herself.  Taken together, they offer contrasting viewpoints that I find interesting.  What's your take on either or both ideas presented in these articles?

About negative book reviews

Getting mad, then even

I think in the first piece the author of it has mistaken nastiness, and personal attacks for a negative review. I wouldn't consider the review he cited to be much of a review. I wouldn't pay attention to a review like that. It doesn't sound like it was a thoughtful review; just someone showing off. There does seem to be a lot of over-the-board negativity on the internet.

In the second piece, it doesn't sound like this was an actual review. It sounds like her friend may have thought he was being helpful. But it certainly spurred her on, didn't it?

I enjoy a well-written review, whether it is negative or positive. I'm looking for the details about the book. I don't always agree with the reviewers. I've read negative reviews, and gone on to read the book because I realized that I would enjoy what the reviewer didn't care for.

Good points, BeeJay. What really annoys me about some book reviews is when the reviewer barely mentions what the book is about and, instead, uses lots of words to discuss things related to the book or author but doesn't actually describe or quote from the book itself. That gives me no information on which to base my opinion as to whether or not I want to read it. Sometimes the reviews are enjoyable to read, and not negative in the slightest, but I come away from them feeling like I still don't know what the book is about.
