I know it's supposed to be off topic but fun ...

Can I do off topic but growsing...

A dang camera got me - on some obscure dang road - presumably making my way through the maze of streets that usually lead up to dang industrial estates - doing 36 in a 30 zone. And I'm such a careful tootler!! Dang. Blast.

Sigh.

I know there's no excuse - but DANG.

Not a revenue raiser my dang foot.

Next camera I see is getting a claw swipe.

Sorry to hear about that, Calico.  How much is the fine?  Would it console you if Mycroft were the one tracking you? Very Happy 1984 is here to stay! Shocked

Darn cameras! I know... let's hire the Kid to take them all out! draw

Allegra warned us about them - said to be careful if we visit the UK.

Them damn cameras are out to get you! Mad  And Allegra was right - the UK's full of them ..... but not many of them are actually filming so you have to guess!Suspect

I got caught by one a few years ago when there were traffic works on a motorway (speed limit 70mph) and I slowed to 50, as this is the norm. Unfortunately it was 40. A real stealth tax.
I attended a speed awareness course (alternative to a fine and points on my license) where I met Princess Anne! Rolling Eyes

Okay so dang camera but I have one question - is it you or your car that is getting the ticket? I ask because here you can actually challenge it by saying you weren't driving and in most cases they will drop it because there isn't a picture of the driver. I know, it's a loop hole, but smack your foot, tell it was bad and not to be so heavy next time would be good enough punishment for me.

We have those things here, too. I got caught by one about 1.5 years ago, just doing the same thing every Chicagoan does. When you see a yellow light, that means go very fast. And I did. However, the city claimed that the light turned red when I was in the intersection, and thoughtfully included two photos of my cat along with a ticket for the moving violation.  Mad  Like you, I did NOT feel like making that kind of donation to the city.

First off I have to ask...was that meant to be photos of your car? Or did they actually take pictures of your cat, Rosie?Laughing

To play devil's advocate...If one had not been breaking the law one would not have got oneself a fine would one dear furry paws?Very Happy  Where's that angel with a halo icon when you need it,  huh? Hugs.

I have been caught parking on a side street during the hours of 12 noon and 2pm when only residents are allowed to park there...got the ticket at 12.10pm..and I was out there trying to move the car at 12.15.Were they hiding in the bushes waiting for the clock to change?Mad  That was the first day at my new job..I was £50 down before I had even earned a penny!

Gosh, Maz, what a shame!

Here's my driving ticket story: Many years ago, I was behind a car driving erratically at night.  I sped up to pass him and got stopped.  I decided to contest the ticket.  And I got it thrown out because the cop had not written the speed limit I'd been going at on the ticket!

On the subject of CCTV cameras: That name always makes me think of China Central Television, which is where I first heard the acronym.

From Bloomberg News, April 29, 2013:
London boroughs and the city’s transit network together have deployed more than 91,000 CCTV cameras, according to 2011 data obtained by Big Brother Watch, a civil liberties group.

There’s no authoritative estimate of how many tens of thousands of other cameras are operated privately at stores, office buildings and other locations in the U.K. capital, where closed-circuit cameras are easily visible on street poles, in shops, in the subway and on buses. In London, it’s estimated that on average, an individual may be recorded by more than 300 cameras in a single day, according to a 2012 report by Big Brother Watch.

And that's just in London--yikes!

I thought this was an appropriate way to end my post:

Ohh, I have no camera stories, but I've got a good one about tickets.

We used to live at 7200 ft at Lake Tahoe and the road to our house was very steep and winding. Snowstorms happen there all the time and you just have to take them in stride or get cabin fever. I was taking my 11-year old daughter to a birthday party during a snowstorm and came around a blind corner to find a pickup truck parked in the middle of the road. While I was already in first gear and four-wheel drive low in a truck with studded snow tires, I tapped the brakes and spun out doing a couple of 360's and hitting the rear end of the truck. We kept sliding past the truck and ended up in a snowbank. I hustled my daughter out of our truck and we retreated up someone's driveway only to see several more cars come careening down. In front of the original parked pickup was a car full of guys trying to put chains on in the middle of the road!

The cops drove up and when the officer left his car, he fell on the ice. He kindly took my daughter and tucked her into the patrol car. She later told me that while she was sitting in the front seat, the officer gestured to the driver of the truck I had hit and said, "See that guy, he's going to jail; he has $900 worth of unpaid parking tickets."

They took the guy off in handcuffs and the woman who was in the car with him walked up and down the street asking all the stranded drivers if she could use their cell phones. She was on her honeymoon and her husband had just been arrested and she needed to make bail!

So, Calico, maybe paying that ticket might not be the worst thing that ever happened to you. sm

PS. My insurance company declared the whole thing an act of God-- no points!

Dear Maz:

I made a typo! Well, if the city of Chicago sent me photos of my cat as cute as the photo I use here as my profile picture, maybe I wouldn't mind so much. No, it was two photos of my car; pretty unmistakable, since I was driving a beat-up 1995 Saturn with a unique variety of bumper stickers such as "I hike YELLOWSTONE", "Cat Lovers are PURRRfect!" and "All Who Wander Are Not Lost." Not to mention my license plate was easy to see.

No, as a Chicagoan, I have the right, nay - the duty, to apply a unique definition to the yellow light. When you see the yellow light, it means "hit the accelerator and go very fast through the intersection." Sadly, I did not floor it fast enough, and was still passing through the intersection when the light turned red. Somehow, some way, that seems to be illegal. It cost me $125 to get through that intersection. Mad

Worse happened last year in Colorado, when I was driving towards the Four Corners. My friend and I were having an intense conversation, and, as happened to Calico, neither one of us saw the numerous signs that lowered the speed limit near some casino. I got pulled over. The police officer wondered what could be so interesting that neither me nor my friend noticed the speed limit signs. I said, "A man, officer. What else?" He laughed, and then wrote me a speeding ticket equal to the cost of renting the car for a week.  Shocked

Hey!  We now know a topic to get a speedy (ha) response on the board, huh?

Replying to Frankie:
Yup - I'm requesting the speed awareness course option.  Glad to be offered it.  (Note for US ladies, it costs half as much again as the fine - but keeps your license clean.)
You met Princess Anne?  Really?
Wonder who I'll meet.

To Rosie Annie:
Reading your first post I was blinking too...scratch  She had her cat with her?  Was the cat driving?  Waving from passenger seat?  sitting with fur flying in the wind on a roof rack?

To Inside Outlaw.
Dang Insurance Firms!!! They take your premiums and... Ooooh. I suggest you do a nice (by which I mean entertainingly bitter:twisted: ) story where an insurance official gets his come uppance. Be a nice change from bank managers and railroad barons.

RosieAnnie,

I'm glad you didn't have a beta. I had a delightful mental picture of your cat riding next to the window above the backseat all snuggled against the glass in the sun.

Speed awareness school, hum? We have traffic schools here, depending on cities, counties, and states offering them, and don't I know it. I used to be a speed demon, and paid for it with three of those classes. Comedy Traffic School, many of them are falsely named. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I hate to say it, but I deserved my tickets, and was lucky to get so few. In my defense,I did grow up in outer Los Angeles, and everyone gets a little crazy driving here. There was the time I was going full speed on the freeway and a police patrol car pulled up behind me. There were two officers inside, and they used their loudspeaker to address me. I couldn't understand what they were saying, so I started to pull over, figuring, here's another ticket. As I slowed down they passed me, and now I understood what they were saying, "Just slow down, we don't want you to get in an accident."

I was wondering about the cat as well. I mean, jeepers, my cats are 12 and 11 and they haven't learned to drive yet.
