I've heard the term "hog leg" for a pistol, but have you ever heard a small gun called a pea shooter? Or a pea popper?

pea shooter-yes. I've read the term in 19th century books. Never heard of or seen pea popper. Since there really were pea shooters for children, the term was mocking or derisive.

I've heard pea shooter, and took it to mean a very small gun. Didn't know the origin that BJ stated--that's cool!

I've heard of pea shooter both in the sense of a small handgun or as the device I had myself as a child. Can't say I've ever heard of a pea popper.

I've heard quite a few slang words for guns, but I've never heard of a pea popper. draw

But I bet you have seen them in old movies. Simply a narrow tube that a child, usually a boy, blows a pea or other small round object out of. I think WC Fields was a target in some of his pictures. Groucho Marx uses one in Horse Feathers while he is teaching anatomy - he and Chico and Harpo have a pea shooting battle.

Huh... I learn something new every day on this site.

I thought a pea shooter was like a straw that you blew a pea out of to hit someone or something.

Love the pea shooter battle in Horse Feathers!

Perhaps a boy was the shooter in movies, but rest assured peashooters were equal opportunity items when I was a kid. Had my share of them and held my own in "battles" with the boys. Very Happy

I remember kids trying that when I was a kid. They used corn rather than peas tho.

I remember soggy bits of paper being formed into balls and fired. Nasty boys!
