Here's something to cheer you up amidst all the horrors in Boston and West...

At the end of this month, our queen abdicates and we'll be getting a king - the first one in 100 years.
Queen's day will turn into King's day and my dad no longer has a day off on his birthday.
To commemorate this, we've been swamped with anything and everything royalty related and today was the official publication of the Koningslied - a song for the new king.
Tension was building these past few weeks (months) as more and more dutch artists assigned themselves to this grand project, a song from the nation to the new king.

In the 8 o'clock news, a reporter showed the lyrics to people in the street and asked for their comments.
"It's a St. Nicholas poem!"
"This is embarrassing!"

A group of people now started a group on Facebook, as well as a petition "We apologize for the Koningslied!"

Best comment I read: "BREAKING NEWS! Louis van Gaal selected Koningslied as goal keeper for dutch football team. It'll keep everyone 40 meters away"

Someone else said, "Well, it achieved at least one thing. The whole nation agrees on something!"

We really should leave royal celebrations to the Brits. sm

Best wishes to the Netherlands with the new monarch, Radiogaga! Thanks for sharing. I love the Netherlands - have visited twice. Got to the royal palace, which used to be the town hall of Amsterdam - I never can understand how that happened. Great building with great art!

Thanks for a good laugh at the end of a very long day, Radiogaga80! Best wishes to Queen Beatrix. Will she be called Queen Emeritus, like the former Pope? And where can we hear the new song online? I'm real curious now!

No, she'll be called princes Beatrix. And it'll be king Willem-Alexander.

Oh, here's a funny on that. The king and queen to be were interviewed earlier this week and the question of names came up. The interviewer wanted to know if after King Willem III we would now get king Willem IV. The reply he got? "I am not a number. Willem IV is out in the field with Bertha 38." Very Happy I think it'll be different but we'll be okay.

As for the song... I'm sure it'll be online somewhere but after reading the lyrics I refuse to listen to it. Especially now I only found negative reactions to it. coffee

Great thread, Radiogaga, I love the Dutch royal family. They are so down to earth and human. Good luck to the new King Willem-Alexander, and best wishes to Princess Beatrix. She's had such a sad time.

I just listened to the song (available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=h_lRn6oBwWY). It won't be going to #1 on my playlist, that's for sure. I'm not sure it could even make it in the Eurovision song contest! Even without understanding the lyrics, it's...weird.

On the other hand, I think it's rather nice the king gets his own song written for him. Here in the US, presidents just adopt popular songs, especially during campaigns, sometimes without asking permission first (and then they have to cease and desist if the songwriters object).

The latest news is that the after the huge load of criticism he got, the composer pulled the song back. Laughing

As for the lyrics... the public could hand in lines and texts and those were used for the lyrics. Should I get bored tomorrow, I might attempt to translate them. FYI, this is not the only song composed for this special occasion. But this particular song was quite hyped up these past few weeks and months so expectations were high.
