Here's a very interesting article about fan fiction that appeared in the U.K's Guardian on-line edition. Although it covers a lot of the history of fanfic, strangely, it never mentions AS&J fanfic!

Thanks for posting. Definitely a very interesting article, though I don't agree with the writer's contention most fanfiction nowadays is AU or with his definition of slash. Reading the comments was very illuminating, too.

It makes me nervous that fanfic is so in the news and there are articles like this, which don't help people's preconceptions about what it is we write. It's sad that I feel a little embarrassed telling people - so I generally don't! 50 Shades hasn't helped too much ether as now it's thought that fanfic is just smutty writing.

I too enjoyed the comments - although the link to the 'worst fanfic ever' was a little upsetting!

Hmm. It was interesting.

Seems to me the author's biggest complaint was that fanfiction was always in some way deriative, but isn't all literature based on only seven original plot devices? If so, isn't it all derivative?
